Hello Donors, friends and family,
The Dorothy Jean Coates Scholarship Foundation Fund was established on October 21, 2021, and awarded its first scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.
These scholarships are for the purpose of supporting, recognizing, and encouraging non-traditional students to pursue their educational goals. It will help students that did not have the opportunity to pursue their college degree in the traditional sense of becoming a full-time student immediately after high school, for whatever reason.
We would like to say: we see you, we want to recognize you, and we want you to be encouraged to continue your educational goals.
This scholarship fund was founded for the legacy of Dorothy Jean Coates. She was the wife of Richard Coates, Jr., and the mother of five children. After the birth of her 5th child, she obtained her high school diploma by attending night school at Cardoza High School in Washington, DC.
In 1975 she decided to enroll in Northern Virginia Community College while being a wife, mother and working full-time. She took one course per quarter every chance she could and continued to do so until she graduated. In 1993 she graduated from NVCC with an Associate of Science degree in General Studies.
But she didn't stop there — she continued her education at Mary Washington College (University), taking one course per semester until her death in 1998. She was truly and literally a lifelong learner.
We are very appreciative of The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia for their partnership on this scholarship.
Gratefully yours,
Richard Coates, III — Founder
