We are excited to offer the Dorothy Jean Coates Scholarship, an annual award designed to support students in their academic pursuits. This scholarship is open to students enrolled in undergraduate programs at accredited U.S.-based colleges.
As a dedicated advocate for education and community support, Richard Coates established this scholarship to encourage and empower students to achieve their academic goals. Recognizing the importance of education in fostering positive change, Richard is committed to helping students succeed.

By offering this scholarship, we hope to promote students' academic careers and support their journey towards becoming future leaders and innovators.

Eligible Criteria
To be elegible for the Dorothy Jean Coates Scholarship, applicants must meet the following critiera determined by the National Center for Education Statistics:
- Student attends college part-time
- Student works full-time while in school
- Student has delayed enrollment into postsecondary education
- Student is recognized as financially independent for financial aid purposes
- Student has dependents other than a spouse
- Student is a single parent
- Student passed a General Education Development (GED) exam or earned a certificate of high school completion instead of receiving a standard high school diploma
- Preference will be given to applicants attending Northern Virginia Community College
- Applicant must clearly demonstrate the unique challenges associated with them returning to school
Preference will be given to "nontraditional" applicants.
